CEDAR L-J WITH BACK TO BACK WINS

by Tru Starling

Stop number 2 of the Australian Open of Surfing at Port Macquarie featured a fun weekend of waves and good times. With the surf being 1-2 foot clean conditions, it had the potential to be anyone’s crown to take.

The event had another stellar line-up of fierce competitors with the crowd favourite Molly Picklum attending this event, the event became a little bit more interesting. All of the ladies put on an absolute show on the first day of the event with the finals day to be even more show-stopping.

Come finals day afternoon, the women in the final head out, sister duo Bodhi and Cedar Leigh-Jones take on the central coast surfer Molly Picklum and young gun Rosie Smart. The waves began to produce some steeper sections during the 25 minute final than in the morning and the girls were able to crank it up a notch.

Bodhi Leigh-Jones came in fourth, with a slower start than the rest of the girls she was able to bring it back at the end of the 25 minute heat posting a 5.67 which brought her back in the game.

The young smiling assassin Rosie Smart put together a respectable heat total of 11.10 came in third, the backhand of this chick is effortless, smooth and consistently guarantees her solid scores.

Molly Picklum, with a slower start to the heat than we are used to, opened up her account with an 8.83 and backed it up with a 5.60. Only needing a 5.85 to take the lead, Molly didn’t go down without a fight.

But, Cedar Leigh-Jones was able to snag the win off the other three talents with a 6.17 and an 8.50. Cedars explosive hits into the end sections really helped her to consolidate scores and her smart competitive tactics towards the end of the heat was something we are used to seeing from the Leigh-Jones sisters and showed just how hungry she was to win the second stop of the Australian Open of Surfing at Port Macquarie.

Coming into stop 3 this weekend at Kiama, we will have our eyes peeled on Cedar and Molly to see if the rivals come head-to-head in the final. Will Cedar go three for three or will Molly take the crown off her or will we see someone new crowned? Stay tuned…
