ALL HAWAIIAN EVENTS CANCELLED, SO WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?
So we sat up and did a final read through of our article on who we thought looked good for the upcoming Sunset CT event in Hawaii (FYI, Bronte, Steph and Carissa) offering (what we believed would be) a sure fire selection for everyoneโs fantasy teams.
We head to our beds ready for a never ending direct message chain from fantasy experts thanking us for helping them win whatever league they are a part of in the coming days.
And then, to our surprise and completely out of the blue we awake to find that all competitions in Hawaii are cancelled and Santa Cruz is postponed (which we think may be another WSL word for โcancelled but not yetโ).
Now 2021 is an interesting year for us at Murmur-Mag as supporters of the WSL, as some of our close friend circle are now competing on the CT. We watched a few of our friends leave for the Hawaiian and US legs from Australia and while we were excited for them we did have a little concern about what was happening in the world and the amount of time they would be away from home.
Then the clips started dropping from everyone in Hawaii and we thought all was โgoodโ.
Now, in a blaze of glory, all comps are off or on hold making Bells Beach the next event on the CT calendar, we are happy to see everyone start to head home safe and start to build their Bells, Margarets and Snapper games for April.
But then we looked at the coming scheduleโฆโฆ
Assuming Australia is easy for everyone to come to compete, and crossing borders from 3 states within Australia who pretty much have locked their borders to anyone and everyone is doable the next events are:
Brazil (63,000 daily Covid-19 cases on 06/01/21)
South Africa (21,832 daily Covid-19 cases on 06/01/21)
America (255,728 daily Covid-19 cases on 06/01/21)
These countries (from what Australian news is reporting) are reporting very high COVID-19 and in some cases have mutating strains of the virus?
So if a low reporting virus country like Hawaii is cancelled due to a Covid-19 outbreakโฆ. Our question is how are these countries going to protect the athletes and officials moving into those 3 events?
Weโre not hating on the WSL here at allโฆ We just want to make sure our favourite athletes are safe.
We would love to hear your thoughts on 2021, the event calendar and how it has played out so far.
