MURMUR MAG PREDICTS THE 2021 WORLD CHAMPION AT TRESTLES

by Jesse Starling

We are now heading towards the back end of the CT year and soon the final five surfers will be confirmed to surf for the hotly contested 2021 Women’s World Surfing Title. The WSL has committed to a lot of changes over the last 12 months and we think the end of year surf off is a pretty cool idea and we can’t wait to see how it all plays out.

Not only does it allow the top 5 female surfers in the world to showcase their skills at Trestles, a high performance world class wave, it levels the playing field making the stakes so much higher for these women. So… Who will rise to the top and claim victory for 2021?

For us to predict the final 5 we have to go back and do a recap of the year that has been so far. 6 events have been completed with all events having 6 different winners. Tyler Wright took out the first event at Hawaii late last year, Carissa Moore then took out the second event at Newcastle. Caroline Marks with the win at Narrabeen the 3rd stop of the season. Tatiana Weston Webb clutching the Win at Margarets, quickly followed by Sally Fitzgibbons taking out the 5th win of the year at Rottnest. The most recent victory went to the French lady Johanne Defay who recently claimed victory at the surf ranch.

Having 6 winners really shows how competitive the womens CT is right now!

However, out of these 6 winners Carissa Moore has two seconds, Tati and Johanne both have 1 second under their belt also which tightens things up on the ratings.

With 6 events completed so far the final 5 right now as of today (20/7/21)  looks like this…

1st: Carissa Moore

2nd: Johanne Defay

3rd: Sally Fitzgibbons

4th: Tatiana Weston Webb

5th: Stephanie Gilmore

A pretty phenomenal looking top 5 if you ask us. However the ladies who are ranked 6th-9th place do pose a real threat to the top 5 as of right now. With Caroline marks within grabbing distance of Stephs spot she only needs less than 1000 points to steal that spot. Tyler Wright in 7th place not far behind only needing a bit over 1000 points. Isabella and Courtney are still in striking distance sitting in 8th and 9th. So realistically Steph really needs to final to stay in the top 5 for the surf off and the other girls need to win Mexico or Tahiti.

However, we will have to wait and see what the rest of the year pans out like for these female surfers. Now to our guesstimate. We’ve made our decision judged off consistency through most events, and whose surfing is most suited to the famous wave that is Lower Trestles. This is what we think the final ratings will look like.

World Champion: Carissa Moore

Runner up: Tatiana Weston Webb

3rd: Johanne Defay

4th: Caroline Marks

5th: Sally Fitzgibbons

Now this is just our personal opinion. Who knows how the year will actually pan out. Will we see a comeback from some of the surfers who dominated the early events or will we see some of the top 5 fall? No one knows, however, we are so excited to see. Let us know in the comments who you think will be the world champion for 2021…
