UNDONE IS MORE THAN JUST ANOTHER SURF MOVIE.

by Jesse Starling

6pm on a Sunday, we wait patiently in a packed out reception at the Hayden Orpheum where there were various emotions flooding the air. Taking a look around, the crowd is divided into three different factions. First faction is the fan girl (I can add that I was one of them). Hundreds of young aspiring surfers surrounded by the idols, imagining what life would be like in their shoes. With their jaws basically glued to the ground each and everyone of them was in heaven being surrounded by their hero’s.

Which leads us onto the second faction, the professional surfers. Comfortable in their own skin walking around like they own the place. And they were allowed to feel this way, they had made it to the big leagues. There were a lot of big names in this small theatre. Names from Dimity Stoyle (aka shimmy disco), Coco Ho, Nikki Van Dijk and Matt Wilko all came to support the film and more importantly Laura.

Then there was the third faction, the North Narrabeen Boardriders crew, who huddled together with smiles on their faces so proud of their girl Laura, knowing that each and every one of them have had some sort of impact in her career at some point in her life. It was almost like a scene out of Mamma Mia, multiple proud fathers watching their girl achieve her dreams.

Then you would look to your left and see Laura running around like a headless chook so nervous about the movie and what everyone will think.

As the crowds flock into cinema 6, you can feel the energy rise. Seats were found and the movie begins. I sat next to an elderly man who didnโ€™t know much about surfing at all before the movie began. However, by the end of the movie he had a new found respect not only for surfing as a sport but for women and their progression in sport.

Without giving too much away, the movie from start to finish displays a girl with dreams to surf big waves and how she starts out small and ends up not only achieving her aspirations but completely and utterly smashing them.

The movie finishes, the crowd stands and goes wild. Astonishing! The movie rose beyond expectations. It was filled with anticipation, laughter, a lot of dancing done by Laura as well as a new great appreciation of women in big wave surfing. Laura proved to all that with the right training, mindset and equipment anything is possible. The movie reminds us to be persistent and to just trust the process.

Undone shows us that it wasnโ€™t all easy and everything Laura achieved she worked her ass off for and dont we love her for it.

Congratulations to the director of the film Steve Wall who alongside Laura Enever produced an all round phenomenal film after two long years of shooting, chasing big waves and realising anything is possible. The movie is most definitely worth watching, an amazing feel good story which also keeps you on your toes the entire time.
