TOP 10 SURF MUMS TO CELEBRATE MOTHERS DAY
Since itโs Motherโs Day, we thought it would be appropriate to introduce who we believe to be our top 10 best surfer mums! We wonโt include our beautiful Mum in this (Happy Mothers Day by the way Mum) purely because she will be the only mum in the list, so we thought we should even out the playing field. The only thing that will allow Mumโs to qualify to make this prestigious list is that they have to have been a competitive surfer or surf in general.
In our top 10 (and in no particular order) we have the famous ex Rip Curl model Alana Blanchard who is Mum to beautiful baby Banks and still absolutely rips! Also, real talk, who doesnโt want to just give Banks the biggest squeeze, am I right?!
Then there is the shark attack survivor and all-round legend Bethany Hamilton who has two beautiful kids and still absolutely rips, what a superwoman!
Letโs not forget about the fierce Lisa Anderson, a four-time world champion and full-time mum, Lisa was named as one of the โGreatest Sportswomen of the Centuryโ by Sports Illustrated for Women. Also, if you havenโt seen her movie โTroubleโ, itโs well worth a watch.
Now we move to Kate Skarret. Ex professional surfer who now works for the prestigious Australian High Performance Centre, Kate is not only a mum to her own kids but also to all of her young female athletes out there who look up to her for guidance while on the road.
Belinda Hardwick, North Narrabeen local, ex-tour surfer and now mother to three beautiful boys, always gives the guys a nudge during the monthly boardriders events and without fail there is always a blow up from one of the men in her heat. Bel challenges all aspects of surfing and motherhood and on top of that is an incredible woman.
Mother and grandmother Sandy English is one for the books. This lady is a mum to her own kids and grandkids and stand-out housemum for the surfing NSW crew at the Aussie Titles year after year.
And now we come to Amee Donohoe. Ex professional surfer and mum to two beautiful ocean lovers, Ameeโs best result on the Championship Tour was a 5th in 2008. Now turned surf coach, Amee balances the world of surfing and motherhood beautifully.
This takes us to the energiser bunny, Elle Northey. Elle has energetic boys and manages to maintain her well-known enthusiastic characteristics whilst keeping them entertained. Elle will always encourage any girl in the water to take off on the biggest and most challenging waves to push them out of their comfort zones. And without fail she is always the loudest in the water (sorry Elle but you know itโs true haha).
Moving on to the beautiful Mel Harrison. Mel is mum to Piper and Marlon Harrison who absolutely rip and are some of the kindest people we know. Melโs calming, motherly energy has made her to be one of the most loved mums on the QS tour.
Now onto Filipa Leandro, mother, surfer and author. Filipa has three amazing children and has passed on her beautiful smile and her vibrant energy that fills a room. Filipa has an incredible way with her words and always supports her children on whatever path they take. If you havenโt already, check out her series of books, oh yeah and she rips!!
Even though these women are incredible mothers, we still think ours is better, and we know you think yours is too. So grab your mum, give her a big hug, heck buy her a nice bunch of flowers and wish her a Happy Mother’s Day. And to all those mums out there that are reading this (because we know you are) Happy Motherโs Day to you too.

Hi there,
Great article about so many inspirational role models, thank you!
You might check out Holly Beck aka saltwatermama https://saltwatermama.com/about/
She was my inspiration when I (recreational surfer based in New Zealand) fell pregnant with my first child. Now I have 2 little rascals and surfed throughout both pregnancies till childbirth (3 days and just 30 hours before giving birth respectively)
Cheers, Natalie
Thanks Natalie! Thanks for the heads up on Holly, we will check her out. Hopefully you are getting some waves in NZ.
