TO SURF OR NOT TO SURF? WHEN WILL THE WSL MAKE A CALL?
Before we go too far into this article we want to admit itโs scary writing it. Essentially we are calling out the WSL. The WSL controls the pathway of our dreams and goals and by no means are we coming from a place of bad intention nor do we want to create bad intention towards the WSL, however someone needs to ask a few questions on behalf of our pro-surfing female friends and fans of the sport.
Saturday March 14th 2020 was the last time we got to see pro surfing, and if the Sydney Pro was any indication of how the year was going to play out it was exciting. Then (as we all know) COVID-19 or as we want to call it โThe Fun Killerโ crashed the party and nearly 4 months later professional surfing has come to a complete halt.

Covid takes it out of everyone’s hands, we totally understand that, and general consensus from the pro surfing and non pro surfing girls that we talk to regularly is itโs pretty much impossible to run the WSL tour for at least the next 6 months. Therefore the 2020 WSL tour should be written off, shouldn’t it?
The WSL seems to want to keep dropping clips of some amazing heats from the past but not let their athletes actually know whatโs going on right now? As we were to understand it the WSL would give itโs athletes and fans an update at the start of every month about itโs plans for that month. And for 2 months this happened, no fuss simple communication about the following 4 weeks. Then June 1st came, nothing? Then several days later a 1 paragraph statement was released only on the WSL website letting the world know thereโs no comps for Juneโฆ. Okayโฆ A little late but okayโฆ

As we write this it is July 6th and not one piece of communication has been written?
Keep in mind a lot of athletes make their living from competing..
Also keep in mind a lot of athletes have had their contracts either torn apart or halved in the last few months and have no funds coming in to live on while they train.
To add fuel to what seems to be an ever growing fire right now there are rumours wherever you go saying โhey have you heard the WSL is for saleโ or โI heard the WSL is going under financiallyโ or the โsomeone told me the WSL wonโt be able to run events for at least 12 monthsโ…
Why is there no clear communication from the WSL for itโs loyal fans and athletes?
We were told a few months ago now that 2021 will see a completely new competitive format for the seasonโฆ Okay well what is the new format?? Surely in between cutting old heat videos you could let us know what the new format is?? Once again we have heard rumours and the rumours seem like it might be a cool format but why drop the hint and then return back to radio silence?

So WSL, hereโs what we suggest needs to happen ASAP.
Either cancel the year (which I think everyone sees coming), come up with a plan for the remainder of 2020 or, at the very least, communicate with the public on the 1st of every month as you promised about what is going to happen for the following 4 weeksโฆ
Also inform the fans and athletes about the 2021 format. You set-up the dialogue about it now pay it off by letting us know the actual format.
If youโre selling, good luck to you, we hope you make a solid profit but please ask whoever you sell to this.. Female surfing is here and it is only getting better so donโt forget about us or under sell what we do! That is part of your legacy which is awesome.

So to all of you athletes and fans, maybe itโs time to start asking for answers in the instagram comments section?
Thoughts?
