MURMUR-MAGS DAY 1 RECAP OF THE NEWCASTLE PRO

by Tru Starling

With the second event of the CT having kicked off in the waters of Newcastle Australia, we thought it only fitting to give a nice recap of how the day panned out.

With the event being called on in 1-2ft classic beach conditions, it was nice to see the best of the best surf in QS like waves. Not only was it exciting to watch but it was also clear who came out on top in these conditions.

Local Wildcard Philipa Anderson put together a good heat dropping some decent numbers against 2x World Champion Carissa Moore and progressing through to the second round, avoiding the ever-dreaded Elimination round.

CT Rookie, Isabella Nichols took out her first heat and left everyone feeling pretty aware that she was not one to mess with.

But the lady in the water that I think everyone is talking about is the effortless Steph Gilmore. She was looking sharp on her epoxy DHD and gave us the impression that she was hungry to get a win and put on a great show for the spectators. And that she did.

A couple of extra noteworthy mentions are Caroline Marks who lit up her first wave, Sally Fitzgibbons who came out firing in the first heat and the dynamic duo of the commentary, Laura Enever and Dimity Stoyle who we thought were really good!

It looks like the event is off for today and tomorrow, with the next call being made on Sunday but with the looks of the forecast, we could see a few more lay days until mid-week!

Stay tuned, we will have more recaps to come…
