KIRRA PINKERTON AND HER COMPETITIVE NATURE
Recently, we caught up with a few girls from the San Clemente group. We thought we would dive a little deeper into one of the girls who has an aggressive style and is not afraid to push any boundaries. So we present to you the one and only, Kirra Pinkerton!
Hey Kirra! Can you please introduce yourself, where youโre from and what youโre getting up to at the moment?
Hey guys! Iโm Kirra Pinkerton from San Clemente, and Iโm currently surfing in Bali!
You recently undertook in an article for Murmur about frenemies. Could you elaborate on your relationship with Alyssa and Sam and how you feel that you push each other.
Sam and Alyssa are both from the same place as I am, so we grew up surfing together from a really young age. Over the years, our competitive drive pushed us away from each other because all we wanted to do was win! This was really good for us actually, although we werenโt friends we continued to become some of the best junior surfers around the world. Iโm hoping as the years go by and we all have to start traveling together on tour that we can be close once again.
You also are quite a savage competitor in the water. What do you think is your biggest motivator to be the best competitor you can be?
Iโve always been super competitive and I wonโt lie, I would take it overboard. But thatโs okay because it taught me how to become one of the best competitors and learn from my mistakes. I think one of my biggest motivators is losing, because when you do, all you want to do is go home and train harder.
Iโve also had a look through your Instagram and you seem to work quite closely with Matt Biolis from Mayhem. Whatโs it like working so closely with such a world-class shaper?
Iโve been working with Matt on boards for as long as I can remember! I didnโt know much about boards, so he would shape one that he thought would work best for me, and then from there we could dial it down into the best working board for the conditions! I would have to say Iโm very thankful to have a shaper who also works with some of the best surfers in the world.
You have competed around the world for a while now. What has been your most memorable part of your career so far and why?
My most memorable part of my career is getting to travel around the world, meet new people, and see the different cultures. I love learning about the different places I get to go because it shows the many ways to live life.
Since the surfing has been on hold. What have you been trying to do to improve your surfing?
Since the contests have been off, Iโve taken a new route which is to learn about the history of surfing. I started riding older boards and learning different ways to surf, which has brought me so much joy! Just getting in the water everyday is enough for me, as long as Iโm having fun.
And thatโs a wrap from Kirra, in the water she is a competitive machine but out of the water she is one of the nicest people you will ever meet. We canโt wait to see how she competes in her next event!
