ISA ANNOUNCES ITS NEXT ROUND OF SURFING SCHOLARSHIPS

by Tru Starling

ISA Surfing (International Surfing Association) was founded in 1964 and is recognised by the International Olympic Committee as the World Governing Authority for Surfing, crowning its first Male and Female World Champions in 1964, the ISA has been giving opportunities to many young up and coming surfers since.

This year, the ISA has given 43 young surfers from 15 different countries a scholarship and a chance to make a difference in their lives, with USD $20,000 being distributed among the new wave of scholarship ambassadors according to the particular needs of each recipient.

The countries include Argentina, Barbados, Brazil, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, India, Iran, Jamaica, Maldives, Morocco, Senegal, The Gambia, Trinidad and Tobago, and Venezuela.

15 year old Genesis of Engabao, Ecuador one of the ISA sponsored surfers

One of the mentioned recipients, Fifteen-year-old Genesis of Engabao, Ecuador has been surfing for seven years. She is ranked first on the 2019 national circuit and has dreams of competing in more tournaments in the coming years. Genesisโ€™ scholarship will go towards a computer with internet access for 12 months allowing her to attend online classes due to the pandemic as she is currently not able to easily attend. The award will also buy her a new board, wetsuit, fins, and leash so that she can continue her journey towards being a national surfing champion. Lastly, it will help cover travel costs and the cost of a surf coach, which she would love to learn from.

7 year old Maria from Acadia, Morocco one of the ISA sponsored surfers

Seven year old surfer Maria from Agadir, Morocco has been shredding waves since she was four years old. Maria says she feels โ€œstrong and freeโ€ when she surfs and dreams of becoming a champion surfer so that other female Moroccan surfers can see that anything is possible. With the scholarship she will be able to purchase a board that suits her height along with a winter wetsuit to help her surf in the colder months. When she grows up, Maria would love to become a police officer or detective so that she can make the world a more peaceful place. She also practices Tae Kwon Do and kickboxing so she is ready to take on any challenge.
