WA RIPPER MIA McCARTHY GETS THE RIP CURL ROTTNEST SEARCH WILDCARD
As we say farewell to the much loved Margaret River, everyone begins to take a closer look at what the Rip Curl Rottnest Search has in store for us. And what a line-up it is.
But what we are most looking forward to is the wildcard, Mia McCarthy. A Billabong sponsored athlete, Mia lives in West Oz and she absolutely rips and charges. With her lethal backhand coming up at Rottnest, we have a strong feeling that she is going to ruffle some feathers during the course of the event.
We thought in the lead up to the event we would reach out to Mia and see how she is feeling:
It is such an amazing opportunity to be surfing in the CT, how are you feeling about surfing in this event?
I’m really happy for the opportunity to compete in my 2nd World championship tour event. I really want to showcase my best surfing. I’m honoured to be representing Western Australian and can’t wait to get to the beautiful Rottnest island.
Have you ever surfed Rottnest before and can you give us a little insight into what it’s like?
I’ve never surfed it before, but I surf a lot of waves similar to Stricklands. I’ve been watching heaps of clips. It’s got a left and a right which looks very ripable.
You are matched up with Carissa Moore and Malia Manuel in your first heat, how are you going to take it to those girls?
Carissa and Malia are incredible surfers. I’m going to have to surf a smart heat and do my best surfing. I’ve had good preparation leading up to this event. The waves have been non-stop this autumn in Margaret river, feeling good.
We are sure Mia is feeling very excited to be surfing a heat against the best of the best, so let’s take a look at the matchups for the Women’s seeding Round.
Heat 1: Stephanie Gilmore vs Bronte Macaulay vs Macy Callaghan
Heat 2: Tatiana Weston-Webb vs Keely Andrew vs Amuro Tsuzuki
Heat 3: Carissa Moore vs Malia Manuel vs Mia McCarthy
Heat 4: Caroline Marks vs Courtney Conlogue vs Brisa Hennessy
Heat 5: Sally Fitzgibbons vs Isabella Nichols vs Sage Erickson
Heat 6: Tyler Wright vs Johanne Defay vs Nikki Van Dijk
Remember to get your fantasy picks in everyone, this one is going to be a big one…
