After 3 lay-days of waiting for waves, the finals day of the women’s CT at the Boost Mobile Margaret River Pro was run, the day was filled with some pretty perfect waves and some solid scores being locked in by the final 4.
As the semi finals began, we were all really looking forward to a backhand attack match-up with Bronte Macaulay taking on Tatiana Weston-Webb. Bronte put up a great fight however, Tati was just a little bit more in sync with the ocean and managed to get the jump on Bronte and moved on through to the final.
The second semi final was one to watch. On paper, it was an all time heat. With 4 x wold champion Carissa Moore starting off super strong and looking untouchable, we were had almost written the heat off when 7 x world champion Steph Gilmore came back to the party and dropped a great looking number with a few minutes to go and secured herself a spot in her first ever Margaret River Final with Tati.
So, a Tati v Steph final.
A goofy footer and a natural footer. Margaret rights. It’s anyone’s game. With Tati posting a healthy 8.5 to kick off the final we were all waiting patiently for Steph to open up and she did locking in two 6+ scores, Tati patiently waited to better her 5 and that she did in the last few minutes, leaving Steph needing a 9.4 to take the win. As the final seconds approached, Steph found a nice wave and came short of the score locking in an 8.17.
So Tatiana Weston-Webb has staked her claim for a 2021 world title, she’s come off the back of a second in the Rip Curl Narrabeen Classic and has now taken out the Boost Mobile Margaret River Pro, what’s next for the Brazilian surfer? We think she is well within her rights to contend for a World Title. Stay posted for more recaps when the Rip Curl Rottnest Search begins…
Also, our hearts go out to the Macaulay family. You will be in our thoughts always, sending you all so much love.
